Glasgow, Montana - Day 7 plus

Day 7 - We arrived in Glasgow on Sunday, June 14.  The drive was uneventful - 2 lane narrow road for about 200 miles.  I would classify it as a minor "white knuckle road".  My Aunt Lona and Cousin Don actually live about 17 miles north of Glasgow in a community named St. Marie.  St. Marie is a group of two story, duplexes and triplexes.  The project was built as housing for the Air Force base that was once located in this part of Montana.  The base closed in 1979 and the homes are being purchased by individuals that prefer to live pretty much in isolation.  Most of the houses are vacant and in total disrepair and when I say disrepair, I mean "ghost town" disrepair.  My aunt and her neighbor, a few house down, live in very nice units but across the street and behind, they have been neglected for decades.  The streets are paved with curbs and sidewalks, street signs and fire hydrants but the vegetation has grown up through the pavement making it hard to see where most of the old roads are.  Many of the homes have been torn down leaving the concrete basements exposed.  It is eerily quiet except the sound of the wind and the birds.  Walking the streets is like walking through some sort of science fiction movie.  Tomorrow I will take photos of the neighborhood - if the zombies don't get me.

Toby is having a great time running wild in St. Marie.  This morning he chased a rabbit down the street a few blocks with Patti running behind in her pajamas.  The neighbors warned us of possible critters so he will most likely stay tied up to the trailer.  Patti, Toby and I took a walk down the abandoned streets yesterday with Toby exploring everything.  We had a comical - at least now it is - experience with him hopping through the weeds up onto one of the demolished house foundations, up on the footing and over the wall into one of the open basements.  I had to walk back to the house, find a ladder and save the pooch.  No one claimed that he is the smartest dog in the world.  In hind site it really was funny.  It reminded me of Odie hopping around in a Garfield cartoon.  Fortunately he did not break any bones.
